摘要 The present invention relates to an optical modulation device and a driving method thereof. In an optical modulation device comprising a first plate including a first part and a second part, a second plate facing the first plate, and a liquid crystal layer which is disposed between the first plate and the second plate and includes a plurality of liquid crystal molecules, the driving method of an optical modulation device according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises the steps of: forming a forward phase gradient by applying a first driving signal to the bottom plate electrode and the upper electrode corresponding to the first part; and forming a reverse phase gradient by applying the other driving signals than the first driving signal to the bottom plate electrode and the upper plate electrode corresponding to the second part. The first plate includes a plurality of bottom plate electrodes and a first orientation. The second plate includes at least one upper plate electrode and a second orientation. The orientation direction of the first orientation and that of the second orientation are substantially parallel to each other. The present invention is designed to easily control the rotation angle on the level of a liquid crystal molecule in an optical modulation device comprising a liquid crystal and modulate an optical phase, thereby forming various rotation angles of light by controlling the rotational direction of a liquid crystal molecule.
