A process for the production of alcohols and/or ketones comprises oxidizing a hydrocarbon in the liquid phase with molecular oxygen in the presence of a boron adjuvant, the water partial pressure in the gases in contact with the reaction mixture being reduced during the course of the reaction. The process is applicable both to batch and continuous type oxidation systems. The water partial pressure can be reduced by varying the oxygen content of the oxidant gas stream e.g. by varying the amount of inert gases in the gas stream or by varying the amount of hydrocarbon boil-up e.g. by heat input and/or by regulating the temperature and pressure. Examples oxidize cyclohexane and dodecane in the presence of meta-boric acid. |
