1,250,551. Printing apparatus; selective printing. UNITED STATES STEEL CORP. 17 Feb., 1969 [15 Feb., 1968], No. 8547/69. Headings B6C, B6F. Rolled plates are marked by spraying them with liquid through stencils 38 as they pass under plate 30 after discharge from a rolling mill and while they are still hot. Each stencil 38 carries a plurality of characters and is pivoted about a shaft 39, so that a character which it is desired to print may be brought into alignment with an opening 37 and nozzle 42. A fractional-second blast of marking fluid from the nozzle 42 forms the appropriate character on the moving plate. Preferably the marking solution is a 50‹ Baume sodium silicate solution to which 5 lb. titanium oxide and 1À25 lb. kaolin per U.S.A. gallon have been added. Air and water manifolds 57 and 58 make possible cleaning of the stencils 38 and nozzles 42. |
