1303868 Making combustible gas KYUSHU TAIKA RENGA KK 31 March 1970 [28 Aug 1969] 15283/70 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] Hydrocarbons are cracked or steam reformed over a catalyst comprising an alkali polyaluminate (#1-alumina of composition R 2 O.7-8Al 2 O 3 or #11-alumina of composition R 2 O.5-6Al 2 O 3 where R=K or Na). The catalyst may also contain other refractory oxides and oxides of chromium or Group VIII metals (see Division B 1). The Specification describes cracking C 5 -C 6 naphtha feeds to give either a town gas product containing H 2 and CH 4 in quantity but no CO (by using a space velocity of about 1 and a temperature of 800‹ C.) or a product rich in ethylene (by using a space velocity of 5-10). The examples describe the cracking at 700-800‹ C. and various space velocities and steam-tocarbon ratios of (a) a naphtha of boiling point range 30-88‹ C., specific gravity 0À6455 and sulphur content of 130 p.p.m., (b) a crude oil of specific gravity 0À858, and (c) naphtha of b.pt. range 40-170‹ C. and s.g. 0À71; and the steam reforming at 500-600‹ C. and atmospheric pressure of a naphtha of s.g. 0À6574.
