A method of accurately mounting magnetic heads relative to a magnetic disc axis employs a template to accurately locate centring elements 120 and the heads on a mounting plate 100, the assembled plate 100 being located relative to a frame plate 140 by the elements 120. The plate 100 is located over a template 10, Fig. 5, having accurately located apertures 11a-11d and centring blocks 13 for head mounting springs 130, Fig. 4. The elements 120 are located on the plate 100 by pins 20 passing through the apertures 11a-11d in the template and are screwed in position, while further pins passing through holes 133, 135 in the springs 130 into holes 15 in the blocks 13 radially align the springs which are then screwed at 134 to the plate 100. The template and pins are removed and the heads, comprising multiple floating heads in a ceramic holder 136, are screwed to the springs 130 at 133, 135. A second template (30, Fig. 8, not shown) containing a central aperture (31) and four bosses (33) at the corners is supported adjacent the frame 140 and centred relative to the motor spindle 142 by a roundness meter attached to the spindle. Further elements 120 are screwed to both sides of the plate 140 using the template (30) and the two plates 100, 140 bolted together, having been accurately located by the pins 20. A plurality of plates 100 and discs may be likewise assembled together. |
