[Also in Division B1] A stirrer for glass comprises a molybdenum core 14 coated with alumina or other refractory 17 and sheathed in platinum or platinum alloy 18, any gas space between the core and sheath being charged with an inert gas (e.g. argon or nitrogen. The gas space may be evacuated through a hole 20 in one or more steps to a pressure not exceeding 10<SP>-3</SP> Torr and inert gas introduced to a pressure not greater than that above the glass and preferably 2 Torr. The stirrer has an upper cylindrical portion 11 and a lower flatter portion (12, see Fig. 3, not shown) and is screwed into a steel flange 13 to which the sheath is silver soldered at 19.</p> |
