A rear push-button actuated, retractable ball-point pen has a tiltable control member 12 interposed between the push-button 11 and the refill 9. The control member has two latches c and d (Fig. 11) for engagement with an annular abutment 81 formed on the interior of the pen housing 8, and a pin 121 which engages alternately in pairs of recesses e and f provided on the ends of the lugs 111 of the push-button 11 (Figs. 9 and 10). With the pen in the retracted position (Fig. 1), depressing the button 11, Fig. 2, causes the latch d of the control member 12 to rest behind the abutment 81, so that upon releasing the button, the member 12 tilts to engage the other latch c with the abutment 81, whereby the pin 121 moves from recesses e to recesses f (Fig. 3). The pen is now projected. Further depression of button 11 disengages latch d from abutment 8 (Fig. 4) resulting in the return of the pin 121 to the recesses e upon tilting of the member 12 (Fig. 5). The retracting mechanism described may also be used in a multiple retractable ball-point pen with a pendulum selection mechanism (Figs. 13 and 14).
