Antibacterial composition comprising a phosphonic acid derivative of the formula:

wherein R is lower alkanoyl and
n is an integer of 2 to 5
or its pharmaceutically acceptable salt and a ss-lactam antibiotic or its pharmaceutically acceptable salt, and use of said antimicrobial composition for the treatment of infectious disease caused by pathogenic bacteria in infected human being or animals.
