PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To approximately transform a free curved surface of an optional type and order into a B-spline curved surface so as to become uniform in the distribution of knots and control points. SOLUTION: This method approximately transforms a free curved surface into a B-spline curved surface, calculates positions of sampling points (including points on a boundary) so as to become the same in a distance between the sampling points in an original free curved surface by designating the order of the approximate B-spline curved surface, sets a parameter of the respective sampling points so as to become the same in a parameter interval between the sampling points, calculates a knot vector in the u, v direction of an approximate B-spline curved surface from the parameter of the sampling points on a u, v boundary, and forms the approximate B-spline curved surface approximate to the original free curved surface from the positions of the sampling points, the degree of the approximate B-spline curved surface, and the knot vector.
