1,117,507. Air cushion vehicles. GENERAL DYNAMICS CORPORATION. 8 Sept., 1965 [1 Oct., 1964], No. 38357/65. Heading B7K. The cushion space of an air cushion vehicle is partitioned by a baffle which is vertically movable. The baffle may comprise an inflatable bag 12 depending from which is a rigid skeg 18, which is raised by deflating the bag. The raising may be aided by an actuator or a tension spring extending through the bag from the vehicle body to the skeg. Alternatively the baffle may be of T-section (Fig. 5, not shown), the junction of the T being pivoted to an actuator rod extending below the vehicle body, and the arms of the T being connected by tension springs to the body to resist pivoting. In other embodiments, the baffle is a flexible rubber sheet translatable vertically into the body (Fig. 6, not shown), or comprises a series of sheets each pivoted about a horizontal axis to enable them to be raised into the body (Fig. 7, not shown). The baffle may comprise a membrane stretched between struts (which may be inflatable members) depending below the body (Fig. 15, not shown), or between levers pivotable by actuators to tauten the membrane (Fig. 14, not shown). |
