Magnetically operated switch in a protective housing is filled with an inert gas and has mercury or other conductive material between the contacts. The protective housing is made up of two sections (1, 4) whose inner surfaces are wetted with a liquid metallic material (11), with an insulating material (2) which is used as a core to support a contact element (3). The metallic coating on the surface of the base (1) enables it to be magnetised. It is sealed to a cover (4) which also has the metallic coating and supports the magnetisable armature (7). The armature has a restoring spring (6) enabling it to move at right angles to the base.
