The spring tensioner (1) has a first and second gripper elements (2,3) which are arranged coaxially to each other in a guide tube (8). The two gripper elements can slide relative to each other along the axis of the guide tube by means of an adjuster member.The first gripper element is circular in shape for mounting on the upper spring plate (4). The second gripper element is yoke-shaped and has a winding to engage with the spiral spring. The first gripper element has mounting surfaces which match the contours of the upper spring plate such that during the tensioning process, the upper spring plate has a mounting angle of at least 180 deg. relative to the first gripper element (2,2/1)
