PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimally avoid stress concentration at a rack tooth part by forming a recessed and protruding shape on a rack tooth inner surface of a hollow rack shaft. SOLUTION: In this hollow rack shaft 1 used in a steering apparatus for an automobile or the like, the recessed and protruding shape corresponding to a tooth surface of the rack tooth is formed on the hollow rack tooth inner surface 3 of the hollow rack shaft 1. The recessed and protruding shape forms a necessary thickness of the tooth part for substantially equalizing a stress applied to the tooth part of the rack tooth when a load is applied.
