PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To industrially and advantageously obtain β-mercaptopropionic acid for medicine, agrochemical, polymer additives, etc., by distilling away the by- product alcohol produced in heating an ester of β-mercaptopropionic acid incorporated with a specific amount of the corresponding free acid in the presence of an acid catalyst. SOLUTION: In the production of β-mercaptopropionic acid by hydrolyzing raw material ester of β-mercaptopropionic acid (e.g.; methyl β-mercapto-propionic acid), 0.01-10wt.% of β-mercaptopropionic acid based on the ester of β- mercaptopropionic acid is previously added and thus obtained raw material liquid mixture is heated in the presence of an acid catalyst(e.g.; cation exchange resin, etc.), the by-product alcohol is distilled away form the reaction mixture allowing to hydrolyze the raw ester of β-mercaptopropionic acid and obtain the subject β-mercaptopropionic acid in high selectivity and high yield useful as a raw material of organic synthesis such as medicine, agrochemical, polymer additive and photopolymer, etc. |
