Determining and monitoring configuration state of controller for motor vehicle

The method involves encoding the configuration and/or certain functions of the control equipment built into the vehicle; the configuration encoding is interrogated and the controller performs its control functions according to the results of the code interrogation. Vehicle data and/or other equipment data can be encoded. Depending on the outcome of the code interrogation, data sets and program information are activated in the controller. The encoding can be performed by externally wiring the control unit of the controller.
