Web winding apparatus comprises a winder 15 including a turret 20 having spaced arms 26, 28 carrying two cores 30 in parallel spaced relation; a reversible motor 21 for rotating the turret 20 to move each core between a roll unloading station B and a web transfer station A; a roll changer 50 including a horizontally extending member 55 carrying tracks supporting a movable carriage 70; a pressure roll 95 mounted on the carriage 70; a mechanism (Fig. 9, not shown) for moving the carriage 70 between a retracted position and an extended position locating the pressure roll 95 in the path of the cores; at least one knife mechanism 120 supported on the carriage 70 for movement between a retracted position relative to the pressure roll 95 and an extended position projecting into the path of a web directed around the pressure roll; and a mechanism for moving the knife to sever the web and direct its leading end into engagement with an empty core moved to the transfer station A into pressure engagement with the pressure roll 95. Operation.-A web W is directed to the roll changer 50 over guide rolls 61, 62, a squaring roll 65, and either under or over the pressure roll 95 depending whether clockwise or counterclockwise winding of a roll R is required; as the roll R builds up, upper and lower limit switches (Fig. 8, not shown) are actuated by the increasing diameter to control the carriage motor 78 so that the carriage 70 retracts in incremental steps and the pressure roll 95 acts as a rider roll on the roll R. When the roll R is almost fully wound it is moved to the unloading station B by the slow rotation of the turret 20, and an empty core 30 with a prepared adhesive surface is moved to the station A; continued rotation of the turret 20 causes the pressure roll 95 to be retracted and held away from the empty core 30 until the latter is brought into contact with the web W. At this point, the pressure roll 95 is urged against the empty core 30, and at the same time a limit switch 24 controlled by the rotation of the turret 20 energizes the knife mechanism 120, causing the knife 125 to sever the web and to wipe the leading end of the web against the prepared surface of the core, thereby starting a new roll. The cores 30 are provided with reversible drive motors so that the winding may be effected in either clockwise or counter-clockwise directions. |
