An oil separator which can be connected to machines operating with compressed air, preferably pulsating compressed air, to separate oil mist from air exhausted to the atmosphere, comprises a tube 2 which is connected to the air outlet of the machine and which encloses an inner sleeve 3, there being one or more through channels (5) between the tube 2 and the sleeve 3. The oil condenses on the wall of the tube 2 and is forced through the channels (5) between the tube 2 and the scraper sleeve by a small proportion of the air stream, while the main portion of the air exhausts through the sleeve 3. The channels (5) are preferably axially straight but they may be helical and are provided by projections or grooves on the sleeve 3 or tube 2. The tube and sleeve could alternatively be spaced apart by a porous wall (Figure 4). The separator may be connected to a collection vessel 10 for separated oil. A plurality of separators may be connected in series and arranged in a common vessel 10 (Figure 8), this arrangement acting as a centrifugal separator. <IMAGE> |
