Class 93 [Also in Group VIII] Articles, such as single or multiple electric conductors, rods, strips or wire mesh, are encapsulated in polytetrafluoroethylene or other fluorocarbon polymers such as copolymers of P.T.F.E. with hexafluoroethylene ethylene fluoropropylenes or chlorotrifluoroethylenes, by including the articles, covered on each side with one or more sheets of the unsintered polyfluorocarbon, between pressing members one or both of which is or are formed with recesses corresponding to the articles, and pressing the whole, preferably so that the unsintered layers where pressed together have a final thickness less than their joint original thickness. The pressed product may be heated after removal from the press, for example to 327‹C. or to higher temperatures such as 330‹- 430‹C., to sinter the polymer. As shown, Fig. 1, parallel electric conductors 13 are passed through rollers 10, 11, each of which has recesses 12 corresponding to the conductors, between sheets 14, 15, of unsintered P.T.F.E., the rollers having a spacing less than the joint thickness of the two sheets. The encapsulated conductors 18 are passed through an oven 16 to sinter the sheets. In a modification one roller only is recessed, forming the planoridged product of Fig. 5. The product may be used as such as a wiring unit or may be slit into individual electric conductors. The sheets on opposite sides of the assembly may be differently coloured, and/or differently coloured strips, placed side-by-side with slight overlap, may be used for one or both sheets. Instead of separated sheets single sheets folded longitudinally around the conductors or other articles may be used. In a further modification a ladder-shaped copper sheet is placed, with an intervening P.T.F.E. sheet, on a die having a corresponding ladder-shaped recess, a second P.T.F.E. sheet is superposed, and the whole pressed cold with a plain press-plate, the assembly being then heated to 350‹C. in an oven. The products may be used for making printed circuits.</p> |
