Lime-contg. steelworks slag is treated to render it suitable for use in building materials by mixing used foundry sand into the slag while it is still molten. The C contained in the sand burns to provide heat for melting and, if there is insufficient residual C in the sand, a C-rich component, e.g. a fly ash fraction, may be added to supplement it.
