PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure constraint of a driver, independently of the position and angle of a steering wheel. SOLUTION: An air bag 15 is stored in the rim 10 of a steering wheel 4. When high pressure gas generated from an inflater 17 provided on a column cover 2 is supplied to the air bag 15, the inflated air bag 15 tears along a tear line on the rim 10 and expands into a doughnut shape. The diameter of the expanded air bag 15 is larger, exceeding the diameter of the steering wheel 4, to ensure constraint of a driver ranging from his/her abdomen to his/her head. In special, as the abdomen of the driver can be constrained at the lower side of the air bag 15, a phenomenon for the driver to be slid into the lower side of the air bag 15 during collision is surely avoided. |
