Cylindrical sealed Ni-Zn battery designs, which ensure separation of the catholyte and anolyte while allowing gas diffusion between the opposite polarity electrodes, are new. The batteries may have stacked electrode discs, a wound composite strip of the electrodes or a concentric arrangement of electrodes and preferably include a gas-permeable insulating hydrophobic material, which consists of a PTFE, polypropylene or polyethylene foam, felt or porous material, and an ion conductive membrane which is either an anionic exchange membrane, which minimises zincate ion passage, or a microporous polymer (preferably SiO2-filled polyethylene) foil with its pores filled with Ni(OH)2.
