The invention comprises benzothiazole and benzocarbamates of the formula wherein R is hydrogen or a C1- 8 alkyl, C2- 8 alkenyl, C3- 8 cycloalkyl or C3- 8 cycloalkenyl groups, R1 is the same as R, other than hydrogen, or a phenyl or halophenyl group, Z is oxygen or sulphur, X is oxygen, sulphur or an -SO- or -SO2- group, Y is halogen or a nitro, C1- 4 alkyl, C2- 4 alkenyl, alkylamino, dialkylamino, alkylmercapto, cyano, thiocyanato or C1- 8 alkoxy group, m is 0 or 1 and n is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4. The compounds can be made by reacting the appropriate benzothiazole or benzoxazole derivative having a hydroxy substituent in position 4, 5, 6 or 7 with (1) an isocyanate R1NCO or isothiocyanate R1NCS to give the compounds in which R is hydrogen or (2) with a dialkylcarbamyl, or thio-carbamyl, chloride or (3) with phosgene or thiophosgene followed by reaction with an amine. The compounds are used as pesticides. Examples relate to the preparation of 4-benzoxazolyl-N-methyl carbamate and 4-benzothiazollyl-N-methyl carbamate.ALSO:Pesticidal compositions comprise at least one benzothiazole or benzoxazole carbamate of the formula: wherein R is hydrogen or a C1-8 alkyl, C2-8 alkenyl, C3-8 cycloalkyl or C3-8 cycloalkenyl group, R1 is the same as R, other than hydrogen, or a phenyl or halophenyl group, Z is oxygen or sulphur, X is oxygen, sulphur or an -SO- or -SO2- group, Y is halogen or a nitro, C1-4 alkyl, C2-4 alkenyl, alkylamino, dialkylamino, alkylmecapto, cyano, thiocyanato or C1-8 alkoxy group, m is 0 or 1 and n is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4, in association with a carrier. In Examples, the activity of two of the above compositions, containing 4-benzo-thiazolyl-N-methyl carbamate and 4-benzoxazolyl-N-methyl carbamate, is compared with that of a known pesticide containing 1-naphthyl-N-methyl-carbamate.
