A continually-variable automotive gearbox has input and output drive shafts and delivers power following a characteristic pre-determined power profile. It may be coupled to a secondary drive unit (17,19,29,36). The secondary drive (17) may be powered from the drive shaft (11) via a translation gear (15,16). The secondary drive can be driven through the gearbox (23,24,25) as required either the drive power input shaft or the drive power output shaft (18). The input gear has an automatically-operated dry clutch. the secondary drive is pref. an electric motor used either as a motor for drive purposes or as a generator.
