An optical fibre has its near end connected to a laser unit for conducting the beam to the far end of the appts. An endoscope shaft or a similar device is used into which the optical fibre is embedded. The laser unit incorporates a laser emitting light within the wavelength range from about 1.2 to 6 microns, and the optical fibre is made of a material which is transparent for infrared radiation. The far end of the optical fibre is provided with an optical system which protects the fibre against damage. The laser emits light within the wavelength range from about 1.5 to 3 microns preferably from about 2.5-3 microns.
