摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely detect the pupil position of an observer even when the peripheral part of image input means has a lowest luminance by setting the area of image information used for visual axis detection on the basis of the lowest value position detected by weighing the image information including an eyeball image and detecting the visual axis of the observer. SOLUTION: A visual axis detecting circuit 101 transmits the output of the eyeball image from an image sensor 14 to a CPU 100. The CPU 100 A/D converts the eyeball image signal from the image sensor 14 by the internal A/D converting means, extracts each characteristic point of the eyeball image necessary for visual axis detection, and further calculates the rotating angle of the eyeball of an observer from the position of each characteristic point. The image information including the eyeball image is weighed, the lowest value position is detected from the weighed image information, the area of the image information used for visual axis detection is set on the basis of the lowest position, and the visual axis of the observer is detected on the basis of the image information of the area.
