Integration of bio-gas generation and hydrogen sulphide oxygenation

One section (3) of a bio-reactor (2) biologically processes organic substances to produce the biogas. The gas is captured in the reactor (2) overhead section (5) from which it is discharged. The reactor (2) overhead (5) section incorporates a fixed bed (6) which oxides hydrogen sulphide and the biogas passes through the bed (6). The bed is supplied directly with an electron-acceptor, especially oxygen and/or nitrate and/or nitrite. The electron acceptor is not introduced into the other section (3) of the bio-reactor (2) held under anaerobic conditions. The fixed bed (6) is supplied with an electron acceptor by a sprinkle-circuit (7,8,10). Alternatively or additionally, the fixed bed may be a membrane serving as a substrate for the biomass, and for the controlled supply of the biomass with the electron acceptor.
