PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems in a pickup roller which generates noise sliding on some place and an excess load is applied to a drive section when it slides on some place by freely rotating the pickup roller in a recess on the side of a paper bearer after paper passes between the paper bearer and the pickup roller in a paper feeder. SOLUTION: The paper S is fed when the pickup roller 10 is rotated in contact with the surface of the paper S mounted on the paper bearer 1. The recess 14 is formed on the paper bearer 1. When the paper S on the paper bearer 1 is exhausted, flange bodies 13 provided on the side sections of the pickup roller 14 collide with cushion materials 15 at the peripheral edge sections of the recess 14 to position the pickup roller 10 at an idling position in the recess 14.
