SOLUTION: The coefficient of friction of a road surface is obtained form aμcalculation map on the basis of the slip ratios Sr and driving force Fx of wheels. At a verification section 26, the presence or absence of a protrusion is verified by comparing the slip ratios Sr of front and back wheels on the same slip road surface at the time when the calculated value Mμof the road surfaceμis outputted. At an output determining section 28, the output of the calculated value Mμis determined in the case that a protrusion is not verified at the verification section 26. The outputted calculated value Mμis determined as the final coefficient of friction of the road surface.
