The mandrel (1) can be driven reversibly to allow the winding and unwinding of bobbins, particularly bobbins of sheet steel. The mandrel includes a grip (2) that operates using the principle of expansion. The expansion principle has a double expansion which allows the grip to have three pre-established different configurations. For each configuration a mechanical stop arrangement (4) is provided that ensures stability of the configuration.
