A medical rivet, comprising: an implantable partially hydrated or dry rivet having a length and comprising a plurality of polymerized collagen fibers configured to expand when exposed to liquid to frictionally engage a target local structure to hydraulically affix the rivet in the target local structure, wherein the polymerized collagen fibers are configured as an array of discrete polymerized collagen fibers, wherein the discrete polymerized collagen fibers are substantially parallel over at least a major portion of the length of the rivet, wherein the partially hydrated or dry rivet is flexible, wherein the partially hydrated or dry rivet has a cross-sectional area that is between about 85% to about 95% that of the target local structure before implantation, and wherein after no more than 24 hours after implantation, the rivet is configured to swell to a sufficient degree to frictionally engage the target local structure to withstand a pull out force that is at least 15 N.
