The purpose of the present invention is to provide a gas barrier film having exceptional gas barrier properties and resistance to folding, as well as exceptionally uniform gas barrier properties, and a method for manufacturing a gas barrier film, having excellent functional stability during production. This gas barrier film is characterized by having, on a base material, a gas barrier layer that contains carbon atoms, silicon atoms, and oxygen atoms, the film composition varying continuously in the layer thickness direction, the oxygen atom percentage differential (A – B), where A (at%) denotes the greatest maximum value of the oxygen distribution curve closest to the base material surface side of the gas barrier layer among oxygen distribution curves in the depth direction measured by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy of the gas barrier layer, and B (at%) denotes the smallest minimum value in the layer thickness direction of the gas barrier layer, is within a range of 20-50 (at%), and the maximum value A of the oxygen distribution curve closest to the base material surface side of the gas barrier layer is the largest amount among the maximum values of the oxygen distribution curves within the gas barrier layer. |
