PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical alignment layer which has superior liquid crystal aligning property. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the optical alignment layer includes processes of applying a material for the optical alignment layer containing a compound having at least one optical aligning group developing an optical aligning function by optical isomerization reaction and at least two polymerizable groups in one molecule on a substrate, irradiating the material with anisotropic light to impart the optical alignment function and heating the substrate or irradiating the substrate with light to polymerize the polymerizable groups.
