PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material detection method in a material supply device capable of checking malfunction of a detector as well as grasping a position of a material in moving and the material supply device. SOLUTION: A material position detection part 65 can detect at which position of the material supply device 1 the material W exists as material detection means FG, F1, F2, RG, R1, R2 are changed over ON and OFF when a head end or a rear end of the material W passes in front of a plurality number of the material detection means FG, F1, F2, RG, R1, R2 provided in the carrying direction. Additionally, a judgement part 67 judges that abnormality occurs on the material detection means FG, F1, F2, RG, R1, R2 in the case when there is nothing corresponding to a normal pattern by comparing ON and OFF change-over patterns of the material detection means FG, F1, F2, RG, R1, R2 with a normal pattern showing normal ON and OFF change-over previously stored in a memory 63.
