Clamping devices for mountain climbers are, ideally, to have bearing points for the clamping jaws in a rock crack, not to shift in the rock crack during use, not to shake lose, to be simple to handle and to combine light weight with maximum possible stability. Four clamping jaws (1), (2), grouped in two pairs of clamping jaws, are connected by a total of three spindles (3), (4), (5). The topmost spindle (3) determines the pivot axis of the pairs of clamping jaws relative to a support bar (6); the central one (4) determines the pivot axis of the clamping jaws of each pair relative to each other; and the bottom one (5) determines the access of connection for an actuating bar (7). Two springs (8) are arranged around the central spindle (4) and secured by their legs, as a leg connection, to the other spindles. The rope fixing eye (9) is formed by a flexible loop which is fixed to the bottom of the spindle and is looped over the topmost spindle. <IMAGE>
