A triggering unit 13 for a safety device in a vehicle 10 operates when the product of impact speed raised to a power q (in which q>0) with acceleration, divided by the time since the start of the collision, exceeds a predetermined value. This condition represents a simplified expression for the mutual stiffness of the impacting bodies. The impact speed is calculated as the relative speed between the vehicle and the impacting object immediately prior to the collision and may be sensed by a Doppler radar system 11. Acceleration is measured by an accelerometer 12. The safety device may be an airbag or a seatbelt pretensioner. |
