NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by the formula (R<1>-R<3> are lower alkyl). EXAMPLE:Trimethylsilyl p-vinylbenzyl sulfide. USE:A monomer for polymerizing poly(p-vinylbenzyl mercaptan) capable of readily deprotecting without causing side reaction in the process. PREPARATION:For example, p-vinylbenzyl mercaptan is reacted with a trialkylslyl chloride expressed by the formula R<1>R<2>R<3>SiCl in the presence of NaH or triethylamine and THF or benzene to afford the aimed compound expressed by the formula. The starting raw material p-vinylbenzyl mercaptan can be produced by reacting p-vinylbenzyl chloride with thiourea in the presence of an alcohol, e.g. methanol, etc., and, as necessary, tert-butylcatechol and bringing the resultant product into contact with an aqueous solution of an alkali, e.g. NaOH, etc., and then an aqueous solution of a mineral acid.
