PURPOSE: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device capable of making compact an inductor as a current limiting element under the reduction of inverted current at a start, simplifying an inverting method, making a device compact and reducing the cost thereof. CONSTITUTION: At the start of a high-voltage discharge lamp LP, the voltage Vc1 of a capacitor C1 as the output voltage of a DC/DC converter 1 is selected, depending on the polarity of the output voltage of an inverter 2, thereby generating high-voltage pulses P at the time of applying high voltage Vc1( H) After the generation of the pulses P, reference voltage Vref1 to determine the upper limit of the voltage Vc1 is lowered from the Vc1( H) to VC1( L) , regardless of a start or a non-start. As a result, the occurrence of excessive inverted current can be prevented even by use of a simple polarity inverting method, under the reduction of the size of a current limiting inductor. |
