Class 130 A variable-speed fan 40, Fig. 1, delivers air at 24 in the direction of movement of a cigarette paper web or belt 20 so as to give a tobacco shower in a chute 10, Figs. 1 and 3, an identical sideways movement, the tobacco being gently deposited on the belt as the fan 40 draws the air off at reduced velocity through an expansion chamber 34, and the whole system being maintained at sub-atmospheric pressure by a controllable vent 44 to dust suction apparatus of the continuous-rod machine to which the tobacco passes under a, compression wheel 26. In a modification, a fan 62, Fig. 5, entrains tobacco from a separate shower 54 located at floor level adjacent the rod-former and delivers it to the belt 20, stems being caught in a trough 18 having an emptying screw 71.
