A horizontal chain conveyor (2) is used to transfer stacking battens onto two fixed rails (1) which are located below the conveyor. the conveyor chain has a number of hinged drag levers with which the battens are moved to their destination on the rails. When the battens are placed on the rails at the required spacing between them, air cylinders (23, 24) are used to move the two parallel rials apart. This allows the battens to fall onto the top plank of the stack that is being formed. The next plank is then placed onto the battens thus the required spacing between planks is maintained.
