<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type liquid crystal display capable of improving contrast, in the projection type liquid crystal display including a reflective liquid crystal element and a polarization beam splitter. <P>SOLUTION: In-plane retardation Re of compensation plates 16R, 16G, 16B is one-fourth of the wavelength of incident light. The angular deviations of polarization axes attributable to the incident direction of the incident light on PBS 14R, 14G, 14B are suppressed. The retardation RthL in the thickness direction of the compensation plates 16R, 16G, 16B is equal to the retardation RthC in the thickness direction of the reflective liquid crystal panels 15R, 15G, 15B in absolute value and is the reverse of the retardation RthC in polarity. The changes in the state of angular deviations of polarization axes of light modulated by the reflective liquid crystal panels 15R, 15G, 15B are compensated. The function of correcting angular deviations of polarization axes and the function of compensating for minute phase differences are achieved by the compensation plates 16R, 16G, and 16B alone. Interfacial reflection of incident light is avoided and use efficiency of light is improved. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
