The switching equipment (10) is connected to an analysis and measurement unit (12) through an input/output assembly (16) and to a system under test (14) through a further input/output assembly (18). The switching equipment comprises a number of switching cards (22-30) under microcomputer (36) control. Each switching card has relay controlled contacts directed by a control interface connected to a common external bus (34) which in turn is operated by a microcomputer (36) through an interface (40). Physical details and syntax are stored for known cards and obtained for new cards enabling simple instructions to be issued to the microcomputer.
