ENGINEERING SALT TOLERANCE IN CROP PLANTS

The invention is an isolated nucleic acid molecule encoding a Na+/H+ exchanger protein for extrusion of sodium ions from the cytosol of a cell to provide the cell with salt tolerance. In a preferred embodiment, the nucleic acid is obtained from Arabidopsis thaliana. Crop species transformed with the gen e are capable of surviving in soil with high salt levels that would normally inhibit growth of the crop species.
