A remote administration system's ability to communicate (figure 1) with r emote computers using ?n-band communications is contingent on many factors ( e g, the operability of the network over which the ?n-band communications is carried and, to some extent, the correct operation of the software on the r emote computer) Accordingly, there may come a time (e g, during a network ou tage) where the remote administration system can no longer communicate with the remote computer over the referred communications protocol (ß g using ?n- band communications) In such a case, a status detector of the remote adminis tration system may detect that an error (figure 5) has occurred (e g, by "pi nging" the remote computer and getting no response or by losing an open netw ork connection) and then switch to a less preferred communications protocol (e g, using out-of-band communications)
