PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focus adjusting device by which proper automatic focus adjustment is executed in accordance with an image pickup condition. SOLUTION: A subject image is formed in CCD 5 by an image pickup optical system provided with a focus lens 3 and the output of CCD 5 is inputted to an AE processing circuit processing automatic exposure control by way of an A/D converter 12, etc., and to an AF processing circuit 25 obtaining an evaluating value for automatic focus adjustment with a gate circuit 24. When a release operation is executed, CPU 20 executes automatic focus adjustment by driving the focus lens 3 and operating the AF processing circuit 25, etc., by a high speed screen rate at high speed when it is judged that a brightness is more than the prescribed one based on the evaluating value of the brightness from the AE processing circuit 23 and by a normal screen rate with excellent precision when a darkness is judged on the contrary. |
