摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize brightness by preventing variation as much as possible in the display brightness caused by variation in an anode current, in a display element. SOLUTION: A display element is comprised of striped gates and cathode conductors in a matrix form, and the cathode conductor has an FEC with an emitter formed thereon and an anode 14 covered with a phosphor. A linear dummy electrode area 16 is arranged, which corresponds to a dummy gate arranged for a part of the gates and has no phosphor in a part of the anode and is not involved in displaying. When the dummy gates are scanned, a reference current value made to flow through the anode and an actual current value made to flow through the anode are compared with each other, and the gate voltage is adjusted by a voltage adjusting part 23 so that the both of them become the same. The anode current can be maintained at a desired constant value corresponding to the fluctuation of the anode current due to temperature changes and other causes, and this suppresses fluctuation of brightness.
