A sliding gate valve for controlling the flow of molten metal including a base plate, at least one sliding plate which forms part of a slider unit and is movably disposed in a sealing relationship with respcet to the base plate for opening and closing the valve and a lower plate urged against the sliding plate by biasing elements, elongate force relieving means being provided on the slider unit extending in the direction of movement thereof and so constructed and arranged that they contact the biasing elements directly or indirectly as the slider unit is moved towards the closed position and thereby reduce the force exerted by them on the lower plate.
