The invention relates to a 12-speed gear box for utility vehicles, with a 2x3x2 construction. The two gear steps of the front-mounted section (GV) are shifted manually, alternately for each gear step of the pneumatically shifted main section (GH) in order to obtain a logical shifting diagram with alternate shifting movements back and forth and a continuously increasing or decreasing gear sequence. The gear steps of the main section (GH) are activated pneumatically when there is a transition from one gear step to the next by means of activating devices (S1, S2, S3). The transition from the slow step (L) to the fast step (S) of each gear step is automatically carried out pneumatically by the rear-mounted section (GP).
