In order to improve an increase in white smoke during transition from a cold state to a warm state in a diesel engine performing multistage injection, a diesel engine (10) having a fuel injector (50), consisting of a fuel supply pump (53) for pressure feeding fuel, a common rail (52) for pressure accumulating fuel being pressure fed by the fuel supply pump, an injector (51) for injecting fuel into a cylinder by electronic control, a sensor (64) for detecting an engine cooling water temperature, and a fuel injection quantity map for calculating a target common rail pressure, the total injection quantity, the number of multistage injections, each injection quantity, and each injection timing based on the output from an engine operating state detection means, is further provided with a total injection quantity increasing means for increasing the total injection quantity of a means for operating injection control amount, and a means for avoiding the number of multistage injections from being changed by the total injection quantity increasing means when the engine moves from a cold state to a warm state. |
