<p>A communication system (102) attaches to protective masks worn by workers in hazardous environments (fires, hazardous waste sites, etc.). A housing (101) is formed of two subsections (101a, 101b) to form a cavity housing circuitry to provide long range radio communication to a remote site and also to provide either short range radio or amplified audio communications between mask-wearing workers in the same vicinity. The housing (101) has a mouthpiece (107) containing a microphone (108) used by all the means of communication and an earpiece (103) housing a speaker for use in receiving radio communications. The housing (101) is mounted to the protective mask using a flange (138). The system can also monitor and automatically alarm physiological conditions of the worker.</p> |
