The motor vehicle shaft seal ring or piston ring has a radially inner or outer sealing surface (2). It has an opposing angled fluid engaging face (8) and a further angled support face (7) in a groove in the ring carrying component. The included angle of the fluid engaging and support faces is less than ninety degrees. The seal ring is preloaded in a sealing direction and the fluid engaging and support face can define a frusto-conical sidewall face.
